Northbound I-75 in Hernando County was back open later Tuesday morning after an early crash near mile marker 305 shut down all lanes and snarled traffic into the heart of the commute. One lane reopened around 8:30 a.m., but the closure lingered long enough to disrupt both morning drivers and the truck traffic that depends on this stretch of interstate to move through Brooksville and the rest of the county.

Florida Highway Patrol said the first tractor-trailer became disabled in the center lane around 3:15 a.m. on May 5. The truck was driven by a 45-year-old Jacksonville woman. A second northbound tractor-trailer, driven by a 51-year-old Minnesota man, struck the rear of the disabled rig after the driver tried to avoid a collision. The second driver was not hurt. The first driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The shutdown hit a corridor that matters far beyond the crash scene. Traffic reports placed the wreck near the State Road 50 exit, where northbound lanes of I-75 funnel commuters, delivery trucks and long-haul freight past Brooksville before sunrise. Drivers were pushed off the interstate and routed to U.S. 98, with alternate northbound detours carrying them onto U.S. 301 or U.S. 41. For anyone trying to get across Hernando County in the early morning hours, that meant a slower start and a much longer trip than usual.

The closure also showed how quickly a mechanical problem can ripple through the local transportation network. What began as a disabled truck in the center lane became a full interstate blockage while crews cleared debris and worked to get traffic moving again. Earlier 911 calls began arriving just before 3 a.m., underscoring how the disruption started before the formal crash time later listed by investigators.

The wreck fell within Florida Highway Patrol Troop C’s Brooksville district, which covers Hernando County, and the closest FHP station is in Brooksville. Similar tractor-trailer crashes have caused major delays on I-75 before, keeping attention on safety along one of the county’s most consequential freight and commuter routes.
