Spring Hill Garage Dryer Fire Extinguished, No Injuries Reported
A clothes dryer fire broke out in a Spring Hill garage on Redwood Street Sunday; Hernando County Fire Rescue contained the blaze with no injuries.

A clothes dryer fire inside a Spring Hill garage was extinguished Sunday by Hernando County Fire Rescue before flames could reach the vehicles, fuel, and flammables that make garages among the most combustion-prone spaces in any home. No injuries were reported.
The fire broke out in the 14000 block of Redwood Street in the heart of Spring Hill, the sprawling unincorporated community about 40 miles north of Tampa that ranks among the largest unincorporated communities in the state. Crews held the blaze to the dryer and the surrounding garage space. Residents were asked to avoid the area while HCFR personnel worked the scene.
The outcome was notably contained given the location. Garages concentrate hazardous materials: gasoline cans, solvents, paint, and vehicles capable of becoming secondary ignition sources within seconds of flame contact. Keeping a dryer fire from escalating in that environment requires a rapid response.

Nationally, clothes dryers start approximately 13,820 home fires each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association, accounting for roughly 4% of all residential blazes. The primary culprit in the vast majority of those incidents is lint. Dryer lint traps and exhaust vents that are not regularly cleared can accumulate enough fibrous material to ignite at normal operating temperatures. Electric dryers, which power roughly 80% of American households, account for 78% of reported dryer fires.
The fix is straightforward: clean the lint filter after every load and inspect exhaust venting at least once a year for blockages, kinks, or disconnected joints that allow hot air to pool inside walls or cabinets. Sunday's Redwood Street fire is a reminder that the laundry room, or in this case the garage, rarely announces its risks in advance.
