Spring Hill woman celebrates 103rd birthday with tea party, music and dancing

Bonnie Casper’s 103rd birthday drew friends and staff to Vitality Living Spring Hill for a tea party-themed afternoon that was equal parts celebration and community snapshot. The gathering included music, dancing, laughter and a little alcohol, but the deeper story was the network around a woman who has become one of the campus’s best-known residents.

Casper has lived at Vitality Living Spring Hill since 2018, making her one of the community’s longest-standing residents. The Spring Hill campus, at 7030 Evergreen Woods Trail, offers independent living, assisted living and memory care, a range that reflects the kind of support many local families look for as aging relatives need different levels of help without leaving the area. A review listing describes the property as being set on 16 wooded acres, a quieter backdrop for residents who want a residential setting rather than an institutional one.

The birthday party, called “Partea for 103,” leaned into Casper’s favorite color scheme from recent years, with purple woven into the decorations. Staff members said they were thrilled to honor someone they describe as strong and healthy for her age, and one called her one of the healthiest residents in the community. Casper, who said it feels good to be so old and so loved, has clearly become more than a resident at the Spring Hill facility. She is part of the daily life there, a familiar face in a place where companionship matters as much as care.

Her story also reaches well beyond one afternoon. Casper grew up in Eastern Indiana, spent much of her life moving from base to base while her husband served in the military, raised two children and later saw her family grow to include three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. After her husband died, she moved to Las Vegas with her daughter and stayed there for nearly two decades before relocating to Florida in 2012. Hernando Sun also marked her 102nd birthday with a similar story on June 5, 2025, showing that this has become an annual milestone for the community around her.

That local celebration fits a larger Hernando County picture. Spring Hill’s 2020 Census population was 113,568, and 22.8% of residents were age 65 or older. Hernando County as a whole had a 2020 population of 194,515, with 26.1% age 65 or older. Nationally, the U.S. Census Bureau’s centenarian report treats people age 100 and over as a distinct and uncommon population group, which is why a 103rd birthday stands out. In Hernando County, it also serves as a reminder that aging well depends on place, people and the daily support that keeps older residents engaged.
