Families on Hernando County’s west side lost their neighborhood library Monday when the West Hernando Branch Library, also known as the Staffordene T. Foggia Memorial Library, closed for renovations at 6335 Blackbird Avenue in Brooksville, near Weeki Wachee. The county said the branch will reopen after repairs are completed, but no firm date has been announced.

For now, residents who depend on the West Hernando branch for books, computer access and community programs will need to turn to the county’s other library locations: Main Library/Brooksville, Spring Hill Branch and East Hernando Branch. The closure is especially disruptive because West Hernando normally serves weekday visitors only, with hours Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed Saturdays and Sundays, so the branch’s weekday schedule leaves little flexibility for students, parents, job seekers and older adults who plan library trips around work and school.

Hernando County listed the shutdown as a fresh May 11 news update, making clear that this is a current operational change tied to repairs rather than a permanent shift in service. The branch is one of just four county library locations, underscoring how much pressure even a temporary closure puts on the rest of the system when one neighborhood branch goes dark.

The West Hernando site has also served as more than a library. County records show it was used as a Disaster Recovery Center after Hurricane Idalia, and in December 2024 the county announced that the recovery center there would close and move to East Hernando Branch. That history points to the building’s role as a civic site that can be pressed into service when the county needs a familiar public space on the west side.

The closure comes as Hernando County is also weighing the future of its library system through the Library Facilities Master Plan, a long-range planning effort announced in February that seeks community input on future facilities and services. West Hernando has been closed before for short-term maintenance, including parking-lot repairs in May 2019, and this latest renovation suggests the county is again investing in the branch’s upkeep. For west-side readers, the immediate change is simple: the neighborhood library is shut for now, and the next visit will have to wait until the repairs are finished.
