Boy Scout Troop 358 will lean on one of its most familiar fundraisers to keep local Scouting affordable in Holmes County: the annual Hog Roast & Silent Auction from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Tope Printing in Millersburg.

The event gives families a simple way to support the troop with lunch and a bid in the silent auction, and the money will help cover the kinds of costs that can decide whether a Scout can stay active year-round, including camping, outings, supplies, leadership activities and other program needs. One meal purchase can help underwrite a campout or outing that would otherwise be harder for a family to cover alone.

The roast has also become a recognizable part of the Millersburg spring calendar because Troop 358 has used the same setup before. A previous troop Facebook post described a drive-thru style hog roast and silent auction at Tope Printing, Inc. in the printing parking lot at 1056 S. Washington St., a format that makes it easy for families to stop in and keep moving. That kind of arrangement fits the pace of Holmes County, where weekends fill quickly with school events, church commitments and travel between towns.

Tope Printing gives the fundraiser a central, familiar home. The Millersburg commercial printer says it was founded in 1974 by Paul C. Tope and John C. Tope, and it offers digital printing, offset printing and letterpress printing services. Hosting the fundraiser there ties the troop’s work to a long-running local business that many residents already know by name.

The silent auction should add another layer of support, giving donors a place to contribute gift cards, services or other items that can push the total beyond the price of a meal. Families from Millersburg, Berlin, Walnut Creek, Holmesville and surrounding communities can turn out for the fundraiser in the middle of the day, and the payoff goes straight back into the troop’s program. Scouting America’s Scoutbook resources show how much troop records, camping history and service records matter to the organization, a reminder that events like this help sustain more than one Saturday lunch.
