Holmes County Marks Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month With Community Stories
The Holmes County Board of DD is spotlighting firsthand community stories this March, with a SIL Zoom session on inclusion set for March 20.

The Holmes County Board of Developmental Disabilities is at the center of this year's Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month observance, with local efforts built around firsthand stories that illustrate the board's role in community education and support across the county.
March is recognized nationally as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a designation that Services for Independent Living (SIL) describes as "a time to recognize and reflect on the experiences of people with developmental disabilities and their family caregivers." SIL notes the month "promotes inclusion, equity, and understanding while raising awareness about the barriers faced by individuals with developmental disabilities" and serves as an opportunity to "celebrate their achievements and potential, acknowledge progress in the field, and strengthen advocacy within caregiving communities."
The conditions recognized under the developmental disabilities umbrella are broad. SIL's published materials list autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, epilepsy, language disorders, and sensory disabilities including hearing loss and vision impairment as conditions the awareness month addresses.
On the local advocacy calendar, the Holmes County Advocacy Group has noted that Developmental Disabilities Advocacy and Awareness Day is an annual event held each March at the state level in Ohio, giving local advocates a statewide platform alongside community-level activity.

For Holmes County residents seeking connection during the awareness month, Services for Independent Living is hosting a Connect with Conversations session on March 20, 2026, running from 11:00 a.m. to noon via Zoom. The session is open to those looking to engage with others and is part of SIL's ongoing outreach programming.
The firsthand stories being shared through the Holmes County Board of DD's awareness efforts remain the core of this month's local observance, putting individual voices at the forefront of a conversation the county's disability community has been building all March.
