New South Central Fire District station opens in Fredericksburg
South Central’s new 17,000-square-foot station opened on W. Clay Street, turning the old Fredericksburg school site into a larger emergency base.

South Central Fire District opened its new Fredericksburg station at 160 W. Clay St. on May 9, giving the department a larger home on the former Fredericksburg Elementary School site, which served the village from 1891 to 2024. Local officials, firefighters, residents and donors marked the opening at a community dedication that highlighted firefighter safety, regional cooperation and the fact that the $3.2 million project was completed without taxpayer funding.
The new 17,000-square-foot station gives the district more room to stage apparatus, store gear and support crews before they head out on calls. That matters for a department that handled 410 fire and EMS calls in 2025, a record year, after ending 2024 with 393 calls. For homes, farms and small businesses in the district, the change is less about ceremony than about a better-equipped base for getting crews organized and on the road.
Village records show the project was already underway by April 14, 2025, when district representative Joe Chupp reported that footers and block work had begun. The new station replaces a longtime operational footprint at 288 N. Mill St. in Fredericksburg, where South Central has maintained a longstanding presence. The move places the district in a more modern facility at a visible location in the village core.

The opening also underscores how much the old elementary school site has changed. A building that once held classes for more than a century now anchors a public-safety facility built for today’s call volume and equipment needs. The dedication put firefighter safety front and center, but the practical effect for residents is simpler: South Central now has a larger, purpose-built station in Fredericksburg to support day-to-day readiness as call demand continues to rise.
