Long road work, lane restrictions set for Alderpoint Road in Southern Humboldt

Drivers on Alderpoint Road in Southern Humboldt will be dealing with lane restrictions starting Wednesday, May 21, as Van Meter Construction begins storm-damage repair work near post mile 42.1. County notices say motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes while the project runs, and the disruption is scheduled to last through September 15, 2026.

The stretch under construction, Alderpoint Road PM 42.00-42.30, is a narrow rural corridor where even a short backup can ripple through the day. That matters for school traffic, workers heading to and from jobs in Southern Humboldt, deliveries making timed stops, and emergency access on a road where there are few easy alternate routes. Residents in and around Redway, Bridgeville and Alderpoint are likely to feel the slowdown most acutely as lane control tightens the route for months instead of hours.

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors authorized advertising the job on February 10, 2026, and county bid documents for Storm Damage Repair to Alderpoint Road (F6B165) PM 42.00-42.30 show bids were opened March 17. The county engineer’s estimate came in at $3,122,838, and county bid summary materials identify Van Meter Logging, Inc. as the contractor awarded the project for $2,302,256.10. Funding is listed as coming primarily from Federal Highway Administration Emergency Relief money, with additional state and local sources.

The work goes beyond simple resurfacing. The bid package calls for traffic control systems, clearing and grubbing, roadway reconstruction, storm drains, downdrains, subdrain, rock slope protection, pavement reconstruction and erosion control. The bid documents say the job must be completed within 80 working days, a timetable that underscores how much effort is being packed into a relatively short segment of road.

A 2023 geotechnical memorandum helps explain why the repair is so extensive. It says this section of Alderpoint Road was damaged by storm events in January and February 2017 and identifies three failure areas at PM 42.00, PM 42.10 and PM 42.25-42.30. For Southern Humboldt, the message is straightforward: leave extra time, expect lane control, and plan around a project that will keep affecting daily travel well into the fall.
