Open Door moves primary care from Ferndale to Fortuna

Open Door Community Health Centers is shifting all of its primary care services and staff from Ferndale to Fortuna, while the clinic at 638 Main Street in Ferndale is slated to become a senior care center. For people in southern Humboldt County who use Open Door for routine checkups, prescription management, preventive care and ongoing treatment, that means a different trip for the most common appointments.

The change gives Fortuna the full primary care footprint, which could make scheduling and continuity easier if the transition goes smoothly. For Ferndale patients, it means the familiar Main Street clinic will no longer be the place for primary care, and the new setup could add transportation burden for anyone who has relied on walking, a short drive or a single local stop for care.

Open Door already lists separate community health centers in Ferndale and Fortuna, reflecting a networked model across the North Coast rather than a single-site operation. The organization says its purpose is to promote social justice and human dignity, and its careers page says its work touches every part of the North Coast community. That makes the Ferndale-to-Fortuna move more than an address change: it reshapes where local patients find their first stop for everyday medical care.

The planned senior care center in Ferndale could still keep a health presence in town, but with a different focus. For an aging community, a senior-centered site could mean more targeted support, wellness check-ins, referrals and help with aging in place, even as the broader primary care load shifts to Fortuna.

Open Door has also used its own site to mark other service changes in Humboldt County, including a 2022 update on pregnancy care services and a 2023 notice about walk-in acute care. The Ferndale and Fortuna move fits that broader pattern of reorganizing services to match staffing, costs and the demands of rural care, with the most immediate consequences landing on patients deciding where to go for their next appointment.
