Proposal filed to reopen Alibi Bar on Arcata Plaza

Bhupinder Singh LLC filed a proposal Thursday to reopen the Alibi Bar at 754 Ninth St. in Arcata, bringing a long-dark Plaza storefront back into play with plans to serve beer, wine and distilled spirits until 2 a.m. The filing puts the former Alibi site squarely in the middle of Arcata’s nightlife debate, where neighbors, downtown businesses and Cal Poly Humboldt students all have a stake in whether the return means more foot traffic or more late-night friction.

The project’s Proposed Use Description says the bar would operate in the Arcata Plaza area with on-site alcohol service and no food service for now. It also says the business may occasionally host low-impact entertainment such as live music, karaoke or trivia nights, and that noise, glare and odor impacts are expected to be low. The application identifies Bhupinder Singh LLC as the proposed tenant and operator and lists the zoning as Commercial Central, or CC.

The Alibi property spans both 744 and 754 Ninth Street, a two-address site that sits just steps from Cal Poly Humboldt and near the center of Plaza traffic. Ming Tree, Realtors has marketed the former Alibi bar and grill as a roughly 4,515-square-foot commercial property on a 0.11-acre lot, with an outdoor patio area and upstairs office or residential space. The property has also been listed at $650,000, underscoring the commercial value of a corner that has long been tied to Arcata’s downtown identity.

The reopening bid comes after the Alibi closed in early 2024, leaving another gap in a Plaza business strip that has been the focus of renewed attention. Local coverage has described the area as part of a “Tavern Row” revival as vacant or defunct businesses have been lined up for a return, and the Alibi proposal is now headed to the Arcata Planning Commission as a Conditional Use Permit application. For downtown merchants, another bar could help extend evening activity past dinner hours; for nearby residents, the 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. schedule will be the detail that draws the closest scrutiny.

The Alibi name has deep local roots. In 2011, the owner of the Eureka Alibi said he closed that location to focus on family and the Arcata bar, a reminder that the brand has long been anchored on the Arcata side of the river. Whether this reopening becomes a durable revival or another source of Plaza tension will turn on the permit review and the way the street handles another full-night operation.
