Iron County Road Commission Closes Ahlberg, Ranch Roads for Spring Breakup
Two western Iron County roads closed March 20 as spring breakup weakens roadbeds; the Iron County Road Commission says closures are indefinite.

Spring breakup has closed two county-maintained roads in western Iron County, with the Iron County Road Commission shutting Ahlberg Road from M-73 to East Brule Lake Road and Ranch Road from M-189 to Brule River Road as of March 20, with no reopening date set.
The closures, which the commission says will remain in effect until further notice, come on top of county-wide spring road restrictions the ICRC placed on all Iron County roads effective March 5. When roads that have been frozen all winter begin to thaw from the surface downward, melting snow and ice saturate the softened ground, making the roadbed more susceptible to damage. The two western Iron County routes are outright closed rather than simply restricted, a step the commission takes when the risk of road damage is most acute.
Residents, school buses, local businesses, and emergency services are among those affected by the closures. The commission has not announced detour routes or alternate access plans for properties within the closed segments, and no criteria for reopening have been publicly specified.
The ICRC notes that its spring road restriction period typically stretches about 63 days. Historically, the restriction period has started as early as January 31 and has ended as late as June 1, meaning closures and restrictions in Iron County can realistically persist well into May. Michigan spring weight restrictions are currently in effect on all state trunkline highways north of the US-10/M-25 line, including the entire Upper Peninsula. The ICRC's localized closures on Ahlberg and Ranch roads go further than trunkline weight limits, reflecting the vulnerability of lower-volume county roads during the thaw cycle.

The commission's seasonal materials usage underscores the scale of winter road management in the county: during a typical season, the ICRC uses an average of 15,875 tons of sand and 6,376 tons of road salt. The commission describes that allocation as a deliberate balancing act, with one stated priority above all others: "Protecting human life is our top concern."
Drivers seeking trunkline road conditions and closures can consult the MDOT MiDrive Map. Anyone needing information on road restrictions, seasonal permits, or the status of the Ahlberg and Ranch Road closures can contact the Iron County Road Commission directly at (906) 265-6686.
