Oak Harbor approves lower speed limit on Highway 20

Drivers on Oak Harbor’s north end will soon see a lower speed limit on Highway 20 after the City of Oak Harbor approved a change for State Route 20 between mileposts 43.52 and 47.8. The permanent limit will drop from 50 mph to 45 mph in both directions, tightening the pace on one of Whidbey Island’s busiest corridors.

A July 16 city notice put the new limit on the record, and the change followed a broader round of State Route 20 speed reviews that have reached several parts of the island highway this year. Washington State Department of Transportation said the reductions were meant to better match current driving speeds, traffic volumes and the design of the road and nearby areas.

The Oak Harbor stretch matters because Highway 20 carries commuters, delivery trucks, service vehicles and visitors through the city’s north end, where traffic speed has long been watched closely by residents. A lower posted limit can change how drivers move past homes, businesses and intersections, and it also gives police and transportation officials a clearer standard for enforcement.

WSDOT said changes within Oak Harbor city limits were worked out closely with the city. For stretches south of town, the agency said the review started after questions from community members and a look at traffic patterns. Those decisions were part of the same corridor-wide effort that produced earlier reductions on Highway 20 south of Oak Harbor.

On May 12, WSDOT announced speed-limit reductions south of Oak Harbor, and another permanent reduction between Sharpes Corner and Deception Pass was set to take effect as soon as signs were posted in early June. Together with the Oak Harbor change, the moves show that SR 20 has been under repeated review as officials try to align posted speeds with actual road conditions.

Transportation work on the corridor has also extended beyond signs. WSDOT has said the SR 20 and West Fakkema Road intersection improvements included a compact roundabout built to improve both mobility and safety, adding another layer to the city’s effort to manage traffic on a highway that cuts through the center of daily life on Whidbey Island.
