A narcotics investigation on the 600 block of Oaks Street in Freer escalated into a foot pursuit and an officer-involved shooting early Saturday, leaving one person hospitalized and prompting a Texas Rangers probe, Freer Police Chief Rolando Flores said. The encounter began around 4:45 a.m. on Feb. 14, according to the timeline released by the Freer Police Department.

Flores said two Freer officers were conducting the drug investigation when a foot pursuit of two suspects took place and one suspect ran to a residence on the 600 block of Oaks Street. "During the investigation, an individual came out of a nearby residence and aimed a gun at one of the two officers conducting the drug investigation," Flores said, describing the moment that led officers to take cover and confront the person.

Chief Flores described the officer's immediate reaction: "The officer attempted to take cover behind a nearby vehicle when he saw the weapon." When officers approached the person at the residence, one of the officers fired. Flores confirmed the person was apprehended at the scene and taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Flores said it is unclear at this time how the individual was involved in the narcotics investigation. He also confirmed the officer who fired was not injured and that neither the suspect's nor the officer's identities have been released.

The Texas Rangers have taken the lead on the investigation, and charges are pending, the department said. Investigators have described details as limited while the Rangers conduct their review; Freer Police turned the scene over to Ranger personnel following the shooting.

Officials have not released the name of the hospital that received the injured person, the exact nature of any charges that may be filed, or whether body-worn camera or dash-camera footage exists. Chief Flores noted that more information will be released as the Rangers and Freer Police complete their initial investigative steps.

The incident marks a rare officer-involved shooting within Jim Wells County; county residents seeking further updates can expect statements from the Freer Police Department and the Texas Rangers as the probe continues. Charges remain pending while investigators work to clarify the circumstances that led to the early-morning confrontation.
