San Diego ISD reaches 82% of enrollment goal before school starts

San Diego Unified School District had already reached 82% of its goal of welcoming 1,309 new students before the first day of school on Aug. 10, a sign that the district entered the final stretch of summer with most of its enrollment plan already in place.

Superintendent Dr. Fabi Bagula gave the update in the district’s July 14 board meeting report, using new figures from enrollment hubs to show how many families had already completed the process. The district’s online enrollment page keeps registration open for the 2026-2027 school year, leaving a short window for parents who still need to lock in a place for their children before classes start.

Enrollment drives staffing assignments, classroom setups and support services, and San Diego ISD’s progress came as statewide and national enrollment declines continue under pressure from lower birth rates, rising housing costs and changing demographics. A district news item dated July 13 put the June total at more than 1,085 new students.

For families in San Diego and the surrounding Jim Wells County area, the district rolled out 52 Enrollment Hubs citywide. A district video posted May 22 set the hubs to open from June 8 through July 2, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., to help families with online enrollment. The hubs gave parents in person help.

The July 14 board meeting agenda listed the superintendent’s information report at 00:10:37, and the same session also included introduction of 2026-27 student trustees, administrative assignments, and approvals for the 2026-27 schoolwide program and school plans for student achievement.
