Sashamon and his band drew a local crowd to Common Ground in Kīlauea on Nov. 22 in a community effort to support young Kaua‘i surfers bound for the world junior championships in Peru. Doors opened at 6 p.m. and music began at 6 30 p.m., with a program of live performances, raffles offering more than $5,000 in prizes, and sales of food and beverages. Ticketing on the event page listed $45 for general admission and $98 for VIP, and proceeds were designated to help cover training and travel expenses for the Hawaii Surf Team.
Organizers noted that seven of the team’s twelve members and the coach come from Kaua‘i, underscoring the island’s deep investment in ocean sports and the youth who pursue them. For small island communities the costs associated with international competition can create significant barriers, from training resources to airfare and equipment. Local fundraising events like this one bridge immediate gaps, but they also highlight the uneven access to competitive opportunities for young athletes across socioeconomic lines.
Beyond the immediate financial boost, the concert had public health and community implications. Participation in team sports contributes to physical fitness, mental wellbeing, and social connectedness, all of which are protective factors for young people. Community support for youth athletics can therefore be seen as an investment in broader population health, while reliance on ad hoc fundraising points to systemic funding shortfalls.

Advocates and local leaders may view the event as a reminder of the need for more sustainable policies that support youth development and equitable access to competition. Potential steps include expanded school and county funding for travel and training, partnerships with non profit organizations, and targeted grant programs to reduce the burden on families. For now, the fundraiser provided practical assistance and a visible show of solidarity as Kaua‘i athletes prepare to represent Hawai‘i on the world stage.
