Chef Roy Yamaguchi returns to Kauai with Ocean House opening June 8
Roy Yamaguchi is set to open Ocean House at Outrigger’s Līhu‘e resort on June 8, a move aimed at visitors, local diners and island suppliers.

Roy Yamaguchi will return to Kaua‘i on June 8, when Ocean House opens at Outrigger Kaua‘i Beach Resort & Spa in Līhu‘e, giving the east-side property a new signature restaurant built around oceanfront dining, seafood and sustainability.
The timing is deliberate. Outrigger tied the debut to World Ocean Month, and the June 8 opening lines up with World Ocean Day, signaling that the company wants the restaurant to read as more than another hotel outlet. On a property that spans 25 beachfront acres and holds 350 guestrooms, the launch is part of a broader push to make the resort a higher-profile destination for visitors and, potentially, for local diners looking for a special-occasion table without driving to Kōloa or Princeville.

That strategy fits Outrigger’s larger investment pattern in Hawai‘i. The company finalized its acquisition of Kaua‘i Beach Resort & Spa in August 2023, then had Ameresco complete more than $15 million in energy-efficiency and maintenance upgrades in February 2024. Outrigger says nearly two-thirds of its 33 properties are in Hawai‘i, and the company has already used World Ocean Day and World Ocean Month for community cleanup and conservation programming, including an inaugural Kaua‘i Community Cleanup and Celebration of the Ocean at Nukolii Beach on June 8, 2024.
Day-to-day operations at Ocean House will be led by Executive Chef Samual Taganeca, whom Kauai Now identified as the former chef de cuisine at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay. Other coverage says Taganeca trained at San Francisco’s Cordon Bleu and later interned with Atelier Crenn and Michael Mina’s restaurant group before moving to Hawai‘i with his wife in 2016. Outrigger says Yamaguchi and Taganeca are building relationships with local farms and fishermen across the island, which could mean more demand for Kaua‘i-grown produce and island-caught seafood if the restaurant follows through on its sourcing promises.
Yamaguchi’s return gives the opening extra weight. He is a founding member of the Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine movement, opened Eating House 1849 in Kōloa, and previously operated The Tavern at Princeville on Kaua‘i. With Ocean House, Outrigger is not just unveiling a new menu; it is putting a marquee name in front of the island’s resort dining market and raising expectations for what a beachfront restaurant in Līhu‘e should deliver.
