Coastal flooding statement canceled for Kauai after high tide threat

Kauai’s coastal flood statement was canceled after the afternoon tide threat eased, ending a brief alert that had targeted low-lying shorelines, roadways, parking areas and beach access points across the island. The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued the statement at 2:46 a.m. HST on July 14 and set it to expire at 6 p.m. that day, warning that peak monthly high tides combined with water levels running above predicted could bring minor coastal flooding through the afternoon.

In low-lying areas such as Līhue, Kapaa, Kōloa and Hanapēpē, brief flooding can leave saltwater pooling in parking areas, wet road shoulders near the coast and short-lived access problems for beachgoers, oceanfront businesses and people commuting near the water. The original notice was aimed at residents, visitors and businesses in low-lying coastal areas where a few inches of water can change whether a road, lot or beach access point stays open.

The National Weather Service Honolulu public hazard map showed no active hazardous weather conditions for some Kauai locations after the event. The setup that triggered the advisory was narrow rather than storm-driven: a short-lived high-tide cycle, rather than a prolonged weather system, pushed water levels close enough to prediction to raise concern.

In this case, the notice came before dawn and was tied to the day’s highest tides, giving beachside residents, workers and visitors a same-day window to move vehicles inland, delay a beach trip or secure property closer to the water. The county’s mix of public beaches, resort areas and residential neighborhoods near the coast means those decisions can affect everything from a morning commute to a shop opening near the shoreline.

The April 13-15, 2018 flash flooding on Kauai and Oahu came from an upper-level low pressure system that produced torrential rainfall and severe flooding.
