Emergency pole and line repairs are slowing traffic on Kūhiō Highway between Hanalei Bridge and Dolphin, with vehicles being alternated through a single lane in the Hanalei area during the day and more restrictions scheduled overnight.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation said the related lane work began Tuesday, April 28, and will continue into the middle of May between Mālolo Road and Anae Road. The nightly closure runs Monday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., so trips that can be shifted outside that window will avoid the planned work period. During the day, the emergency repair activity has already forced traffic into a single lane, adding delays to one of Kauai’s most important north shore corridors.

The repair is urgent because it involves poles and lines, the kind of infrastructure that directly affects electric service and public safety. Kauai Island Utility Cooperative serves about 38,000 metered locations on Kauai and was formed in November 2002. The utility warns that anyone who encounters a downed line should stay at least 30 feet away and treat every conductor as energized.

The stakes are higher in Hanalei, Wainiha and Hā‘ena because access can disappear quickly when Kūhiō Highway is blocked. During the April 9 flood emergency, the County of Kauai warned that KIUC crews would be unable to respond to outages in those communities while the highway was closed, telling residents to prepare for extended outages. That warning still hangs over this repair work: if crews could not move now, a future outage in the same corridor could take even longer to reach and restore.

The Hanalei River Bridge area has already shown how fragile the route is. Flood-related closures there in April reinforced how quickly weather or a road restriction can cut off access, delay repairs and complicate emergency response. For commuters, delivery trucks and residents heading north, the practical message is clear: expect backups near Hanalei Bridge, allow extra time, and plan around the overnight lane closure that will keep shaping traffic into mid-May.
