Kapaa road closure on Olohena Road rescheduled for June 19

Drivers in Kapaa had to make room in their morning and midday plans for a closure on Olohena Road that shifted to Friday, June 19, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The county said westbound traffic was detoured onto Waipouli Road via Hauiki Road and onto Kamalu Road via Olohena Road, a routing change that could affect school runs, work trips, deliveries and emergency access along one of east Kauai’s busiest connectors.

Even a short daytime shutdown on Olohena Road can have outsized effects in Kapaa, where many drivers rely on the route to move between neighborhoods, businesses and the main highway network. County officials have also said earlier work on the corridor would be minimized during student pick-up and drop-off times to accommodate Kapaa schools, underscoring how closely the roadwork intersects with daily routines in the area.

The closure is part of the broader Kukui Street and Olohena Road Improvements Project, which the county says is intended to improve traffic flow, pedestrian mobility and stormwater infrastructure in Kapaa Town. Public materials for the project describe a mini-roundabout at the intersection of Kahau Road, Olohena Road and Lehua Street, along with sidewalks, crosswalks and bike lanes.

County public works reports from prior years described the Olohena Road work as a resurfacing and reconstruction project between Ka‘apuni Road and Kāmalū Road, with paved shoulders added where feasible. Those same materials also pointed to a reconfiguration of the Olohena Road and Ka‘apuni Road intersection, showing that the corridor has been under sustained redesign rather than a single isolated repair.

The county has said the project has been funded largely by federal money, with the county covering the balance. A public meeting on the improvements was scheduled for June 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex pavilion, keeping the focus on how the road network in and around Kapaa will keep changing as the work advances.
