Kapaa Swimming Pool closes due to mechanical issue, repairs pending

Kapa‘a Swimming Pool was closed Wednesday, May 13, after a mechanical issue forced the Kaua‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation to take the East Kaua‘i facility out of service until further notice. The county said repairs were pending and that crews were working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible, a move that immediately disrupted swim lessons, lap swimmers, keiki programs and families who depend on the pool for regular exercise.

The closure leaves Waimea pool open on its regular schedule as the county’s main alternate site for swimmers who need a public pool. Residents were directed to kauai.gov or to call Waimea pool at 808-338-1271 for more information, underscoring that the county is treating the shutdown as a service interruption rather than a long-term closure. For Kapa‘a and surrounding communities, the practical effect is immediate: anyone planning to use the pool should put those plans on hold until the county announces repairs are complete.

The county did not say in its notice which mechanical component failed or how long the repair work is expected to take. That lack of detail is significant for regular users, because a pool closure can stem from equipment tied to filtration, circulation or other safety systems, and county officials chose to close the facility rather than keep it open under uncertain conditions. The brief notice also leaves open the question of whether this is an isolated breakdown or part of a larger maintenance pattern at county recreation facilities.

This is not the first time the Kapa‘a pool has gone dark for mechanical problems. The facility closed April 1, 2025, because of a mechanical failure, then closed again on Sept. 17, 2025, before reopening Oct. 1 after repairs were completed. When the county later reopened the pool, it listed regular hours that included open swim Tuesday through Friday and adult swim Wednesday through Saturday, showing how many daily users can be affected when the facility is taken offline.

The county’s Parks and Recreation facilities page says pool hours can change seasonally and advises people to call ahead to confirm hours, a reminder that even routine swim schedules in Kaua‘i can change quickly when equipment fails. For now, Kapa‘a swimmers are being steered to Waimea while county crews work on the repair.
