Kauai County Officials Address Community

Several thousand concertgoers converged on the Vidinha Stadium parking lot off Hoʻolako Street in downtown Līhuʻe for Maoli's "LIVE" show Saturday, generating sustained traffic through the heart of town from the 4:00 p.m. gate until the 10:00 p.m. close, in what marked the first major public concert at the county-managed facility since a $12.2 million renovation wrapped last December.

The event was staged inside the parking lot itself, rather than on the newly renovated field and track, which meant the venue's own lot was occupied by the stage, food vendors, retail booths, and exclusive Maoli merchandise tables from load-in through close. Concertgoers who drove had to rely on surrounding streets and adjacent commercial lots across the Līhuʻe district. The event ran rain or shine with no refunds offered. The same lot that filled with concertgoers Saturday ordinarily serves as the home of the weekly Friday Kauaʻi Farmers Market on Friday afternoons, leaving it clear for the concert operation by the time Saturday arrived. Businesses along the Hoʻolako corridor absorbed an unusual stretch of elevated foot and vehicle traffic across the six-hour window.

The concert bill included three acts. Kauaʻi Kollab, a local collective representing the host island, opened. TJ and The Maui Country Band, led by frontman Thomas "TJ" Fevella Jr., followed. The group has been touring with Maoli through 2026 and carries prior stage credits at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. Maoli headlined.

The headline act carries significant regional weight. Founded in 2007 by Hilo-born Glenn Awong, who grew up in Haʻikū in upcountry Maui, Maoli has accumulated more than half a billion global streams across nine independent albums and logged more than 21 number-one positions on the Regional Island Reggae chart. The band won the 2020 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Reggae Album of the Year for "Sense of Purpose," swept the 2020 iHeart Island Music Awards with Album of the Year and Group of the Year, then returned in 2021 to claim Album of the Year for "The Breakthrough" and Song of the Year for "My Reason." Awong performs with bassist Kana Akiu-Corpuz and vocalist-guitarist Nuʻu Sing-Kahalehau, who has been with the group since 2012.

The Antone "Kona" Vidinha Jr. Memorial Stadium, built in the 1970s as Lihue Stadium and renamed in March 1976 for the former Kauaʻi County mayor, is managed by the county's Department of Parks and Recreation and stands as the only venue on Kauaʻi capable of holding events at the several-thousand-person scale. Phase I of its $12.2 million improvement project, which installed synthetic turf, overhauled the track, and added a new video board, closed the complex from March 2025 through December 2025. Saturday's Maoli show was among the first events to activate the property since that closure ended, with the parking lot serving as the public-facing anchor while the upgraded field and track remained off the main event footprint.
