Hanapēpē was the one site with a catch: because of equipment issues, only bagged trash was being accepted in the lower area until further notice. All other services at the site remained available, but anyone hauling a full load of household garbage or cleanup debris had to pay attention before making the drive.

Kauaʻi County said Hanalei, Kapaʻa, Līhuʻe and Kekaha were open, giving residents several functioning options for routine trash disposal after earlier storm-related service disruptions and adjustments. The county’s April 17 refuse-transfer update was meant to show, site by site, which facilities were operating normally and where limits still remained so households and businesses could avoid wasted trips.

That mattered most for the many island residents who self-haul trash rather than rely entirely on curbside pickup. On a normal week, a family cleaning up after a windy spell or a small business clearing back-room waste may head straight to the nearest transfer station. With Hanapēpē operating under a partial restriction, loads that included loose household trash, bulky material or mixed cleanup debris may have needed to be redirected to another site, or broken up before the trip.

The county said it would issue updates when refuse service was restored at Hanapēpē. Until then, the practical message was simple: check the status before leaving home, especially if the trip depends on a particular station handling more than bagged trash in the lower area.

The update also listed the hours and locations for each refuse site and for the Kekaha Landfill, information that becomes especially useful after severe weather when cleanup work spills into everyday routines. For households dealing with storm debris, green waste or the week’s regular trash, the county’s notice served as a route map as much as a service bulletin: Hanalei, Kapaʻa, Līhuʻe and Kekaha were open, while Hanapēpē remained limited to bagged trash in the lower area.
