Kauai firefighters extinguish Waimea structure fire, estimate $50,000 damage
Firefighters reached an abandoned Waimea building burning from underneath within minutes of a 12:40 a.m. dispatch, holding damage to about $50,000 and avoiding injuries.

Kauaʻi Fire Department crews knocked down a late-night structure fire on Ola Road in Waimea after arriving at a one-story abandoned building that was burning from underneath the structure. No injuries were reported, but county officials estimated damage to the building and its contents at about $50,000.
Firefighters were dispatched shortly after 12:40 a.m. Sunday, April 19, 2026, and reached the scene shortly before 12:45 a.m. Personnel from Waimea Fire Station, Hanapēpē Fire Station and the on-duty Battalion Chief responded to the fire. Crews got the flames under control and fully extinguished the blaze before clearing the area shortly before 2 a.m.
The KFD Fire Prevention Bureau then took over the scene to investigate the cause, which remained under investigation. The fact that the fire was found burning beneath the structure points to how quickly a hidden ignition can spread before anyone notices, especially overnight when streets are quiet and buildings may sit empty.
The response also reflected how Kauaʻi’s fire network is built to cover the West Side. The department operates eight stations across the island, including stations in Waimea and nearby Hanapēpē, and one of its stated objectives is to reduce property loss while arriving safely and in a timely manner. In this case, that coverage brought multiple units to a side road in the middle of the night and likely kept the damage from becoming more severe.
For Waimea, the fire is another reminder that abandoned buildings and other unoccupied structures can still pose a real neighborhood hazard. Even when nobody is inside, a blaze can threaten nearby homes, roads and businesses, and it can pull fire crews away from other calls elsewhere on the island. Kauaʻi County officials noted a previous Waimea structure fire on Alawai Road in June 2025 that also required multiple stations and a Fire Prevention Bureau investigation, underscoring that West Side structure fires can escalate into countywide public-safety responses fast.
