Kauai waste sites face maintenance, equipment and contractor issues

Hanalei residents hauling yard clippings had to change plans after Kauai County said the north shore site’s green waste loading area would close July 7 for maintenance, even as the rest of the Hanalei Refuse Transfer Station stayed open. At the same time, the Hanapēpē Refuse Transfer Station was taking bagged refuse only because of equipment issues, and the Kekaha Landfill had already stopped accepting green waste on July 2 because of contractor problems.

The county’s July 6 update, timed at 2:40 p.m., put the burden on residents to sort material before making the trip. Kekaha remained open for all other services, but green waste there stayed shut down until further notice, with the county directing customers to use the green service at Hanapēpē instead. Hanapēpē is at 4380 Lele Road, and Kekaha Landfill is at 6900 Kaumualii Highway, two details that matter when a drive across the island can end in a rejected load and another stop in a different part of town.

The restrictions left Kapaa and Līhue as the stable points in the system. County status pages listed both sites as fully available, while Hanalei, Hanapēpē and Kekaha each had temporary limits tied to maintenance, equipment, or contractor problems. Regular refuse transfer station hours remained 7:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. seven days a week except county holidays, and Hanalei’s green-waste hours were 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Those shifting conditions exposed how tightly Kauai’s waste network runs. County Solid Waste Division material says a crew of two staffs the Hanalei, Kapaa and Hanapēpē stations, while a crew of three staffs Līhue. The county also says it normally accepts source-separated green waste at all four transfer stations and at the landfill, but that normal pattern can break quickly when one site loses equipment or another loses a contractor.

The July 6 notice followed earlier disruptions this year, including repeated Hanalei problems tied to equipment and a June 8 Hanapēpē limitation that already restricted the site to bagged refuse. Kapaa had also been closed for renovations earlier in 2026 before partially reopening in March. For households and small contractors, the practical rule this week was simple: check the current status before loading a truck, because the closest site is not always taking the material in the back.
