The Keālia Kai parking lot restroom and the access to Donkey Beach in Kapaa were closed for maintenance through Friday, removing one of the East Side’s more familiar shoreline entry points for five days.

Kauai County announced the closure on May 10, and said the work was needed for maintenance. The Department of Parks and Recreation thanked the public for patience and understanding and directed questions to 808-241-4460 or parks@kauai.gov.

The temporary shutdown affected both the restroom and the path to Donkey Beach, a combination that can change a beach trip quickly on Kauai. Families, walkers, fishers and people using the Kapaa corridor for exercise or a short stop at the coast lost not just a bathroom, but a managed access point near Keālia Beach. In a place where public facilities can be spread out, even a short closure can force a detour or shorten a visit.

The notice gave no extra project detail, which suggested the county wanted the work window to stay tight and the disruption to be limited. KITV described the closure as affecting parts of Keālia Beach, including the Keālia Kai parking lot restroom and Donkey Beach access, from May 11 to May 15. The Garden Island also noted the closure in its May 11 news briefs.

The access point carries added weight because Donkey Beach has long been part of the public shoreline network on Kauai. Kauai Path reported in 2007 that work had begun on the public access path leading from Kūhiō Highway down to Donkey Beach, and in 2009 said Ke Ala Hele Makalae Phase II connected Lihi Park in Kapaa to Ahihi Point, north of Keālia Beach and Kuna Bay, also known as Donkey Beach. The group also described a completed bathroom at the Donkey Beach parking lot and shoreline access trail head in its 2007 progress report.

Kealia Kai sits above the beach area as a private beachfront enclave, with access to Donkey Beach by a short walk through the community, which is why any closure at that point has a direct effect on nearby residents and visitors alike. Hawaii Ocean Safety also warns that strong currents can occur at any beach in Hawaii, including rip currents and other hazardous conditions, making reliable access and facilities part of basic beach use planning.
