Lane closures and utility work set for Koloa, Poipu, Kawaihau Road

Lane closures were scheduled across Kōloa, Po‘ipū and Kawaihau Road as county crews and a water contractor moved several projects onto Kaua‘i’s south and east-side corridors. Drivers were told to plan for delays in areas that already carried local traffic, visitor traffic and school-hour trips.

The County of Kaua‘i scheduled lane closures on multiple Kōloa roads from Aug. 6 to 22, 2025, including work on Kalua Moa Road. That work was planned for weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather permitting, putting daytime traffic through a series of lane restrictions during the middle of the workweek.

A separate County notice set lane closures on Kōloa Road from Aug. 20 to 22, 2025 for guardrail repairs between Ōmao Road and Pu‘uwai Gardens. That stretch serves as a key connector through Kōloa, so even short disruptions there could slow vehicles moving between town and the South Shore.

Po‘ipū Road was also scheduled for lane closures from Aug. 1 to 15, 2025 for waterline installation work. The County’s Department of Water said Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., under contract with the department, would conduct utility work and excavation along Kawaihau Road, with traffic advisories aimed at motorists, pedestrians and residents. The County Roads Division says its mission is to keep County of Kaua‘i roadways safe for vehicular and pedestrian traffic, maintain major drainage facilities and provide countywide support with equipment and labor.

Separate state-road lane closures were also lined up for Aug. 3 to 8 and Aug. 23 to 29, 2025, and the Hawaii Department of Transportation maintained a Kauai lane-closures page for highway work. With county road repairs, utility trenching and state highway work overlapping in the same month, commuters faced a crowded construction calendar across the island’s main travel corridors.
