Traffic signals to be out Wednesday at Kaumualii Highway, Koloa Road intersection
Drivers in Kōloa faced a 3-hour signal outage at Route 50 and Koloa Road, with flaggers, possible backups, and extra delay through the morning commute.

Drivers headed through Kōloa had to work around a three-hour traffic-signal outage at the Kaumualii Highway and Koloa Road intersection, where traffic was directed by flaggers from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The shutdown hit a key south Kauai crossing on Route 50, a corridor that carries steady island traffic and can back up quickly when signals go dark.
The biggest delays were most likely during the morning rush, when commuters, school traffic, service vehicles and local errands all funnel through the same intersection. With the lights off, drivers were being asked to slow down, follow flagger instructions and give the crossing extra room, especially for turns onto or off Koloa Road. The Hawaii Department of Transportation said lane-closure schedules can change without notice and remain weather permitting, making timing at the site even less predictable.
HDOT identified Kaumualii Highway as part of its Kauai District road system, underscoring how important the route is for moving traffic across the island. The County of Kauai Roads Division said its mission includes safely conveying vehicular and pedestrian traffic while maintaining roads and bridges, and county officials direct motorists to use the Road Resurfacing and Bridge Status Map to track projects and plan routes around delays.
South Kauai drivers have already been dealing with repeated construction impacts in the same area. The county’s Kōloa Road Bridge and Kīpū Bridge Project was publicly blessed on Feb. 26, 2025, and described as a $1.9 million repair effort. From March 6 to Nov. 1, 2025, Kōloa Road from Poipū Road to Maluhia Road had weekday shifting lane closures from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the Kōloa Bridge carries a 6-ton weight limit.
At the blessing, Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami said the start of the bridge work was about honoring those who came before and connecting communities. The county also advised motorists to use alternative routes, obey flaggers, drive with caution and allow extra time to reach their destinations.
The broader road picture shows how much work has been concentrated in Kōloa. The county’s road resurfacing map lists 146 of 156.75 lane miles paved in the district, with $72,767,726 budgeted and $53,592,780.56 billed to date since 2020. For anyone crossing south Kauai in the morning, that means planning for slowdowns is no longer optional.
