David Kelman spent years in emergency services before a career pivot led him to an unexpected specialty: drawing precisely placed pigment on scalps to simulate the look of hair follicles. On April 3, Kelman launched SMP Ink CDA, bringing scalp micropigmentation services to Coeur d'Alene through a partnership with Deluxe Barbershop.

The procedure uses specialized pigments applied to the scalp to replicate the appearance of hair follicles, producing the illusion of greater density, a close-shaved aesthetic, or coverage over visible scarring. Unlike surgical hair transplants or pharmaceutical treatments, SMP does not regrow hair but delivers visible results without the recovery demands of invasive procedures or the commitment of ongoing medication.

"My background in emergency services led me to scalp micropigmentation, where the focus is helping individuals restore confidence through a natural-looking hairline," Kelman said.

To anchor the business in proven technique, Kelman partnered with Marvin Furrow, founder of SMP Ink USA, to import established training standards and methods into the North Idaho market. That collaboration gives SMP Ink CDA access to technical expertise historically concentrated in larger metro areas, and the business is positioned to draw clients from across the Inland Northwest, including communities in eastern Washington and western Montana.

The decision to operate inside Deluxe Barbershop was deliberate. Pairing SMP with conventional barbering services gives clients a familiar grooming environment to explore cosmetic options, lowering the barrier compared to a clinical or medical setting.
