Coeur d'Alene is getting what organizers say will be the Inland Northwest's first dedicated capybara café, and it opens March 31 inside Big Red's Barn with just 10 guests allowed per session.

The family-run team behind Big Red's Barn calls the concept Capy Hour Café: a reservation-only, Brazilian-inspired lounge where visitors can sip specialty coffees and teas, eat açaí bowls and light tropical snacks, and spend unhurried time with capybaras, the world's largest rodent. The space sits inside the Big Red's Barn building but operates as its own attraction, with a private entrance and exit. Visitors can book a café session on its own or combine it with a trip through the barn.

The interior leans into the capybara's South American roots: warm clay tones, tropical plants and soft lighting shape a room designed to feel calm rather than crowded. The strict 10-person session cap is deliberate.

"This isn't about volume," said Haely Harris with Big Red's Barn. "It's about quality. We want people to feel relaxed, to enjoy their drink, slow down and connect not just with the animals but with the environment around them."

Jace Harris, also with Big Red's Barn, described the ambition behind the design. "We didn't want to create just another café," Harris said. "We wanted to create a place that feels peaceful and magical, like you've stepped into a little corner of Brazil right here in North Idaho. It's meant to be warm, calm and truly special."

Capybaras have grown increasingly popular nationwide in recent years, a trend the Harris family says they've watched up close. "We've seen firsthand how much people connect with capybaras," said Ginger Harris with Big Red's Barn. "There's something incredibly gentle and grounding about these animals. We're excited to create a space where people can experience the joy they bring in a completely new way."

Organizers say Capy Hour Café will be among only a handful of dedicated capybara café experiences operating anywhere in the country. Reservations for the March 31 opening can be made through Big Red's Barn.
