A quiet town of about 3,000 year-round residents, Quartzsite transforms each January and February into what organizers call a vibrant outdoor desert shopping mall — a population surge that few Arizona communities can match. According to the Arizona Highway Department, as many as 750,000 to 1,000,000 people, mostly in RVs, converge on this small desert town, located just 20 miles east of the California border on Interstate 10, for the rock, gem and mineral shows and accompanying events.

The rockhound winter migration to Quartzsite dates to 1965, when the first Rock, Gem and Mineral shows initiated the tradition. What started as a modest gathering has grown into a multi-week, multi-venue showcase. Of the ten or more shows happening simultaneously each season, four are strictly rock and mineral related: the Desert Gardens Show, the QIA Pow Wow, Prospector's Panorama, and the Tyson Wells Show.

Tyson Wells, at 121 W. Kuehn Street in La Posa Valley, anchors much of the activity. For the 2026 season, Tyson Wells hosted the Rock and Gem Show from January 2 through January 11, the Sell-A-Rama Show from January 16 through January 25, and the Arts and Crafts Fair from January 30 through February 8. The QIA Pow Wow, organized by the Quartzsite Improvement Association, has its own deep roots: the QIA started the show back in 1967 with an estimated attendance of 1,000 and about 100 vendors for a three-day event. Today the show draws well over 600 spaces and nearly 250 vendors from all over the world, running five days with attendance of nearly 5,000 each day.

The Desert Gardens International Rock, Gem and Mineral Show bills itself as the fifth largest and longest running show of its kind in the world and the largest in Quartzsite; since 1999, it has brought hundreds of vendors from around the world to sell thousands of rocks, gems and minerals to daily visitors and wholesalers. The show runs daily from January 1 through February 28 at 1055 Kuehn Road.

Across all venues, the scale is staggering. About 3,000 vendors from around the world come to Quartzsite to sell virtually anything and everything, including roughly 500 serious dealers of rocks, minerals, gems, fossils and jewelry. Prices are notoriously inexpensive compared to Tucson, where costs for many of the same items tend to be higher. Admission at all major shows, including Tyson Wells and the QIA Pow Wow, is free to the public.

Quartzsite remained a mining town until 1965, when the gem and mineral shows initiated the rockhound winter migration; these days, the population can swell to almost a million during January and February as rockhounds, jewelers and vendors, mostly in thousands of RVs, attend the eight major shows. That wave of visitors ripples across all of La Paz County, affecting lodging demand, local retail, and traffic along the I-10 corridor well into late February.
