11th annual Night for Nonprofits returns to Oxford Aug. 11

More than 30 nonprofits that handle food support, youth services, education help, health access and family services in Lafayette County and North Mississippi will gather at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center on Aug. 11, giving residents a single place to see which groups are carrying those needs. The 11th annual Night for Nonprofits is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, with tickets set at $20 and available online through Oxford Arts.

The event is more than a meet-and-greet. In Oxford and across Lafayette County, nonprofits often serve as the backstop for problems that government and the private sector do not always cover, and the lineup on Aug. 11 will put that work in public view. Groups selected for this year include Empower Advocacy Oxford, Incorporated and Gold & Pearls Collective, adding named organizations to a roster that now stretches well beyond the city limits.

LOFT, the Lafayette Oxford Foundation for Tomorrow, was founded in 2002 and says its mission is to improve quality of life within Oxford and Lafayette County. Its grants page says a percentage of earnings is distributed each year through grants, and that history gives the nonprofit night a practical edge: it links the organizations doing day-to-day service work with the local funding network that helps keep them moving.

That grantmaking role has been visible for years. In 2016, LOFT had awarded 86 grants totaling $225,000 over its first decade and was preparing to distribute another $10,000. By 2021, Night for Nonprofits had grown enough to fill the Old Armory Pavilion with more than 20 groups at a 6 p.m. gathering, a sign that the annual showcase has steadily expanded as the county’s nonprofit footprint has widened.

This year’s setting also folds in another local project. Oxford Arts says the event page includes a note about contributing $1 to match the Mississippi Arts Commission’s Building for the Arts grant supporting expansion of the Powerhouse. For a night built around visibility, the point is straightforward: the organizations doing food access, youth work, housing support and mental health outreach will be in one room, and the county’s funding and volunteer pipeline will be watching.
