Escaped Prescribed Burn Destroys Mobile Home Near West Spring Hill
A mobile home near County Road 105 burned to the ground Friday after a Mississippi Forestry Commission prescribed burn jumped its containment lines when winds shifted.

An abandoned mobile home near the intersection of County Road 105 and County Road 107 in West Spring Hill burned to the ground Friday after a Mississippi Forestry Commission prescribed burn broke free of its containment lines when winds shifted and intensified, triggering a multi-agency response that stretched into the night.
Lafayette County Public Information Officer Beau Moore said forestry crews were actively managing the burn when winds increased, causing the fire to jump containment lines. The Mississippi Forestry Commission immediately notified the Lafayette County Fire Department, which responded to assist with containing the blaze. A second mobile home sustained damage in the incident but remained safe for occupancy, Moore said. No one was inside either structure at the time.
Six agencies converged on the West Spring Hill area to bring the fire under control: the Lafayette County Fire Department, Lafayette County Emergency Management, Lafayette County Sheriff's Office, Oxford Fire Department, Baptist Ambulance Service, and the Mississippi Forestry Commission itself. As of Friday evening, Moore described the fire as "currently under control but continues to burn," with all agencies remaining on scene to keep it contained.

Officials warned that visible flames and heavy smoke would likely persist in the area for several hours into Friday night and through much of Saturday.
The incident raises questions that remain unanswered as of Saturday morning, including how many acres burned, what wind conditions were present at the time the burn was authorized, and whether the Mississippi Forestry Commission will conduct a formal review of how the burn escaped its planned boundaries. No road closures or evacuation orders were reported, and no injuries were confirmed among either the public or the responding crews.
