FEMA Disaster Recovery Center opens Monday in Oxford for storm victims
FEMA opened a recovery center at the Oxford Multipurpose Arena as Lafayette County residents recover from Fern, which left thousands without power and caused one local death.

Residents hit hardest by January’s Winter Storm Fern got a new place to sit down with federal disaster workers Monday as FEMA opened a Disaster Recovery Center at the Oxford Multipurpose Arena. The center gives survivors one-on-one access to FEMA and other disaster assistance programs, including help with applications and questions about their case.
The opening matters in Lafayette County because the storm did not pass quickly or lightly. Local reporting said thousands of residents in Oxford and Lafayette County were still without power in the immediate aftermath, while roads and driveways were coated in ice and some routes were impassable. Warming centers were opened during the response, including the Oxford Conference Center, as families looked for heat, electricity and a safe place to wait out the outage.
State officials said on January 29 that the storm had caused additional deaths, including one in Lafayette County, underscoring how severe the system was across North Mississippi. FEMA later identified the event as Mississippi Severe Winter Storm, DR-4899-MS, covering the January 23-27 incident period. The federal disaster declaration was approved on February 6, and FEMA said federal disaster assistance was made available to support recovery.
The aid has expanded since then. FEMA said Public Assistance was initially available to state, tribal and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations in selected counties. On April 11, FEMA expanded Individual Assistance to 36 Mississippi counties, including Lafayette County, opening the door for more households to seek help with storm-related losses.
The Oxford center was designed to make that process easier for people who need in-person help, especially those sorting through housing, utility, repair or other storm-related problems after Fern. FEMA said disaster recovery centers are accessible facilities where survivors can apply for assistance and ask questions about their case. County leaders, including the Lafayette County EMA, the Sheriff’s Office and city officials, also have been steering residents toward FEMA’s online, phone and app options for those who cannot get to the arena during business hours.
The center was scheduled to operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. For families still rebuilding after days of ice, outages and fallen trees, the new site offers a direct line to the aid that can help pay for the next step.
