Oxford Board of Aldermen to Vote on Hires, Resignations January 20
The Oxford Board of Aldermen met Jan 20 to consider a broad slate of hires, resignations, promotions, and training requests that affect public safety, utilities, and city budgets.

The Oxford Board of Aldermen met Jan 20 and ran through an agenda heavy on personnel actions and department requests that could affect everyday services and municipal spending. City staff presented multiple hiring requests, resignations, promotions, transfers and training approvals across police, fire, utilities, public works and development services.
Human Resources items on the consent agenda included requests to hire a full-time general government employee and new staff for the Facilities Maintenance Division, approvals of resignations in Facilities Maintenance, Developmental Services and the Oxford Police Department, and the transfer of one employee from Development Services to the Oxford Fire Department. The police department sought permission to hire three employees, remove two interns, approve one resignation, and approve a promotion. The fire department submitted a promotion request and proposed to shorten minimum time-in-rank test requirements for battalion chief and captain. The board also considered changing the Safety Leader at mTrade Park and hiring for that facility; mTrade Park was separately noted as the 2025 USSSA Facility of the Year.
Training and travel requests raised measurable budget items. The agenda listed travel costs ranging from small fees for first aid certification to larger line items such as $13,903.86 estimated for apprentice lineman training for Oxford Utilities, $3,999.36 for two police employees to attend the IACP Officer Safety and Wellness Conference, and $3,250 for Tyler Connect in Las Vegas. Several police training courses and command leadership programs were also included, plus approval for city leaders to attend the Mississippi Municipal League annual conference in Biloxi.
Other agenda items carried operational and community impacts. The board discussed sale of city-owned silver and a contract for digital marketing of the Oxford Conference Center, and considered Change Order No. 5 for the historic City Hall renovation. Engineering items included a professional services agreement for water distribution upgrades on Old Taylor Road and a lane closure on West Jackson Avenue at the Overlook Development near Fraternity Row, a location familiar to residents and drivers around the university corridor. The planning department sought preliminary plat approval for The Grove at Grand Oaks Phase 9 on Crowson Drive, advancing local development approvals.
Procedural details included participation by some commission members via teleconference under City Code Section 2-82 and routine approvals such as accounts and minutes. The board also listed an executive session as a possible closing item.
For residents, the meeting underscored how routine personnel and training decisions translate into public safety capacity, service levels and budget priorities. Watch forthcoming board minutes and future agendas for final votes, contract details, and the implementation timeline for hires, promotions, service contracts and infrastructure work that will affect traffic, emergency response and utility reliability in Lafayette County.
