Oxford city officials are asking residents to weigh in on a draft Parks & Trails Master Plan that will guide long-term decisions about parks, trails, and connectivity across the city. The planning effort, which began with an initial public event on Sept. 30 and continued through months of workshops and conversations, moves into a public review phase with two scheduled engagement opportunities.

The first session, a Community Review & Panel Discussion, will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 28 at the Oxford Conference Center. The planning team will present the emerging plan and invite attendees to review proposals, ask questions, and provide feedback. That evening will also include a panel examining how parks and trails intersect with public space, education, outdoor recreation, culture, and tourism, and how those connections contribute to Oxford’s identity and future growth.

A second opportunity is planned for Jan. 29, also from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Circle & Square Brewery. Titled Parks & Trails Master Plan - In Conversation, the event is designed as a relaxed, come-and-go community hangout with no speeches or formal presentations. Planners and city staff will be on hand to talk directly with residents about ideas and priorities. The city is hosting the brewery conversation in partnership with the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and the Oxford Chamber of Commerce.

The master plan carries practical implications for Lafayette County residents. It is intended to shape neighborhood connections and pedestrian and bicycle mobility, inform investments in recreation infrastructure, and tie public spaces to cultural and tourism strategies. Existing sites such as Avent Park figure into broader conversations about accessibility, programming, and maintenance priorities. For neighborhoods, plan choices can affect walking and biking routes to schools, green space access, and the siting of amenities that influence daily life and property values.

Institutionally, the process positions the municipal planning team and elected officials to incorporate community preferences into capital planning and grant-seeking. Sustained public input since September gives the plan a stronger evidentiary basis, but the effectiveness of community influence will depend on how the city translates feedback into budgeted actions and timelines.

For residents who want to shape park amenities, trail routes, or the role of parks in downtown and neighborhood life, these sessions are a primary opportunity to influence outcomes before the plan is finalized. Attendance at the formal review will allow direct engagement with the draft recommendations and panel discussion, while the brewery hangout offers a lower-key setting for neighborhood-focused conversation. Outcomes from the process will inform future investments and outreach, and they will affect how Oxford balances recreation, culture, and connectivity as the city grows.
