Permitted event to briefly close Oxford Courthouse Square inner circle
Traffic around City Hall briefly shifted through the parking area beside Neilson’s as Oxford approved a permitted event on the Square. The city said the closure was temporary.

Oxford motorists saw another short disruption around Courthouse Square as a permitted event briefly closed part of the inner circle near City Hall and pushed northbound traffic through the parking area next to Neilson’s and City Hall. The detour mattered most for anyone trying to reach the Lafayette County Courthouse, downtown offices or businesses on North Lamar, where even a short closure can slow access and change the route into the Square.
The city’s permit rules require event applications to be turned in to the City Clerk’s office in City Hall at least five working days before the event. That process is part of how Oxford manages a downtown that serves as both a civic center and a daily commercial corridor, where traffic patterns can change quickly when a public gathering is approved.

The Square is not treated like an ordinary intersection. Oxford’s Courthouse Square Historic Preservation Commission oversees the Courthouse Square District, and the city’s historic preservation code says the district’s buildings were constructed mainly between about 1840 and 1950. The code also describes the area as a long-running social, cultural and economic center, which helps explain why street changes there are closely managed.
Temporary closures around the Square are not unusual. Oxford has previously posted notices for other short-term downtown shutdowns, including a traffic closure tied to unloading work at the Lafayette County Courthouse that sent northbound traffic through the parking area adjacent to Neilson’s and City Hall. The pattern shows how often the city has to balance courthouse operations, downtown access and special events in the same compact space.

That balancing act becomes most visible during major events. Visit Oxford says the annual Double Decker Arts Festival draws more than 65,000 people to the historic downtown Square and closes the Square for a two-day celebration. Against that backdrop, a brief permitted-event closure near City Hall is part of routine city housekeeping, but it still has immediate consequences for drivers, courthouse visitors and nearby merchants trying to keep foot traffic moving. The City of Oxford’s main address is 107 Courthouse Square in Oxford.
