A key stretch of 15th Street in Two Harbors will close to traffic for about seven weeks, cutting off the direct route between 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue and forcing drivers onto a posted detour while crews work on city-owned water and natural gas systems.

Lake County said the closure will cover 15th Street from 7th Avenue, also Highway 61, to 8th Avenue, including the intersection of 15th Street and 8th Avenue. The shutdown is expected to begin the week of May 18 and continue until about July 3, placing a sizable construction footprint on the city’s street grid through much of early summer.

The county’s detour sends traffic to 7th Avenue, 19th Street and 14th Avenue, a route meant to keep vehicles moving even as the direct block goes offline. 15th Street will stay open between 9th Avenue and 15th Avenue for local access, and driveway access for properties between 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue is to be coordinated with project personnel.

The work is not a simple resurfacing job. The stated purpose is to improve city-owned water and natural gas systems, which puts the closure in the category of essential underground utility work. For homeowners, businesses and service vehicles near the corridor, that means weeks of rerouted trips, changed delivery patterns and a tighter street network around one of the city’s busiest connectors.

The notice gives residents roughly a week’s warning before the expected start. Lake County published it May 12, and the project was posted to the county site the next day. The timing also fits into a broader 2026 utility season in Two Harbors, where the county’s construction projects page lists a separate street and utility improvement project on 6th Avenue and another on Lighthouse Point Road that is scheduled to run until Oct. 2.

The 15th Street closure also points back to the city’s core infrastructure responsibilities. The City of Two Harbors provides electric, gas, water, sewer and stormwater service, and its Gas, Water & Sewer Department is based at 503 20th Avenue. Paul Johnson is listed as Gas, Water & Sewer Superintendent, and the city says its Gas Department maintains and services both mains and customer gas meters.
