Mandala Rock Painting Class Comes to Castle Danger Brewery in Two Harbors
North Shore artist Ingrid K. Ilg led a $20 mandala rock painting class at Castle Danger Brewery on March 31, with 20 seats and Lake Superior stones included.

Ingrid K. Ilg had 20 seats to fill at Castle Danger Brewery on a Wednesday night in late March, and a collection of hand-picked Lake Superior rocks to help do it.
The North Shore artist taught a mandala rock painting class at the brewery's 17 7th St. location in Two Harbors on March 31, running from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at $20 per person. All materials came with the ticket: paints, brushes, tools, and smooth rocks gathered from Superior's shoreline. Participants who wanted to work on something more personal were welcome to bring a rock from home. Each person left the evening with a finished painted piece.
Ilg walked beginners through mandala patterns step by step, providing templates and demonstrating how to layer paint into the geometric designs. The format required no prior art experience, and Ilg offered guidance throughout to accommodate all skill levels.
For Castle Danger, the event reflects a straightforward midweek traffic strategy. A full room of 20 generates $400 in class fees before a single pint is poured, and the three-hour format extends the typical taproom visit well past a single round. The brewery has built a recurring calendar of similar weeknight programming, including game nights, art-on-tap sessions, and live music, to sustain foot traffic on evenings that ordinarily see little of it.
The arrangement benefits Ilg as much as the brewery. North Shore artists rarely have access to storefronts or galleries with consistent walk-in traffic; brewery partnerships provide a built-in audience and a hospitality setting that standalone studio events struggle to replicate, while also giving the artist a reliable source of per-class income.
Walk-ins were welcome as space allowed, though the 20-person cap made early registration the safer choice. Payment was collected at the door.
Upcoming arts events at Castle Danger, along with similar community programming across Lake County, are listed on the Lovin' Lake County events calendar at lovinlakecounty.com.
