Nonprofit Partners With Two Harbors Rec to Launch Adaptive Family Gym Nights
Families with disabilities in Lake County often drive hours for inclusive recreation. Five Wednesday gym nights at Two Harbors High School this April offer a free or low-cost local option.

For families in Lake County that include someone with a disability, accessible recreation close to home has long meant either a drive to Duluth or going without. Five consecutive Wednesday nights at Two Harbors High School this April are designed to change that, at little or no cost.
Above and Beyond With U, a nonprofit disability advocacy organization, has partnered with Two Harbors City Recreation to launch Family Adapted Open Gym Nights at the high school gymnasium. The program welcomes any family with a member who has a disability, with both children and adults eligible to participate.
The gym will be partitioned into zones to accommodate different activity levels and sensory needs, pairing quieter areas with more active spaces so families can self-select their comfort level. Planned activities include volleyball, racket sports, basketball, and other adapted play. Adaptive equipment will be provided as needed, and participants are welcome to bring safe play items of their own, though wheeled equipment may be restricted to protect participants and gym floors. Standard footwear requirements apply.

The low-or-no-cost structure directly addresses a layered problem. In a rural county where specialized disability programs are scarce, a single appointment or activity in Duluth can consume the better part of a day and a meaningful amount of fuel. Caregivers in Lake County have had few alternatives. The Two Harbors sessions offer a controlled, low-pressure environment where families navigating varying mobility, sensory, or cognitive needs can participate in recreation together, without the logistical overhead that has historically made community programming inaccessible.
Registration and contact details are available through Two Harbors City Recreation and Above and Beyond With U. Organizers are actively seeking volunteers, and the program's ability to expand beyond these initial five sessions will depend on whether community support rises to meet what organizers expect to be substantial demand.
