Trinidad Wildlife Officer Bob Holder Retires After 51 Years of Service
Bob Holder, Trinidad's wildlife officer since 1975, retired after 51 years protecting Colorado's outdoors and was honored at the State Capitol.

Bob Holder stepped away from his post as a Trinidad wildlife officer after what Colorado Parks and Wildlife described as 50 years of service, with a CPW social media tribute putting the number at 51 years and tracing his career back to a first day on the job in 1975. However the final tally is confirmed, the tenure is extraordinary by any measure, and CPW marked the occasion with a formal recognition at the Colorado State Capitol and before the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission.
What drew Holder to the badge more than five decades ago was straightforward. "Bob's first day on the job was back in 1975, when his love for wildlife and the great outdoors inspired him to become a wildlife officer," a CPW tribute noted. "What started as a great excuse to spend more time outside led him to an incredible career of protecting the things so near and dear to him."
Photos from the Capitol ceremony show Holder standing before a cheering crowd, and a separate image captures what appears to be a father-and-son pair of wildlife officers smiling alongside a woman inside the building. Other photographs from across his career document a handshake with an Army commander in a mountain meadow and Holder rigging up a fishing rod for a young girl, scenes that together sketch the breadth of a career that ranged from military coordination to introducing the next generation to the outdoors.

The outpouring of recognition extended well beyond the formal ceremony. Jerry Fragua called Holder "one of the nationwide all-time best," adding: "You've inspired multiple generations, and having known you my whole life, I can genuinely say that I'm one of them." Tom Salaba recalled specific fieldwork alongside Holder: "Legend! Thank you, Bob! I remember learning from you on TNC field trips 'back in the day.'" Shelly Moltrer thanked him "for the years of service to the community," and Alston Williamson offered congratulations on "years well-served."
For southern Colorado, Holder's retirement closes a chapter that stretches back to the Gerald Ford administration. CPW's recognition at the Commission level signals that his five-plus decades of work in the Trinidad region carried weight well beyond Las Animas County lines.
