Belgrade Sweeps Helena's Class AA Softball Home Openers With Dominant Wins

The Helena High Bengals opened their home schedule as reigning Western AA champions and were run-ruled off their own field in five innings. Belgrade's Panthers, the reigning Eastern AA champions, beat Helena High 12-1 before crossing town and defeating Capital 14-3 in six innings, sweeping both Helena home openers on the same afternoon and outscoring the two programs 26-4 combined.

The first game was effectively decided early. A big first inning by Belgrade put Helena High in a hole it could not escape, and the Panthers pushed the lead past the mercy-rule threshold before the game reached its sixth inning. For a Bengals program that captured the Western AA title in 2025, surrendering a run-rule loss at home on opening day signals real work ahead in the circle and in the field.

Capital fared slightly better in terms of innings played but the margin told a similar story. The Bruins, who won the State AA title as recently as 2024, gave up 14 runs across six innings as Belgrade's lineup showed no signs of letting up after its first-game performance.

The sweep adds to what is already shaping up as a dominant early stretch for Belgrade. The Panthers had already beaten Polson 16-3 on March 28, when Rylee Freight hit a grand slam as part of an 11-run first inning, demonstrating the kind of offensive firepower that now has two Helena programs re-evaluating their pitching depth and defensive execution before conference play intensifies.

Helena High next hosts Hellgate before traveling to face Sentinel on April 4. Both remaining Western AA programs will be watching closely: the Bengals and Bruins have the pedigree to recover, but at a combined 0-1 on the season, neither program can afford another opening-week margin that large going into postseason seeding conversations.
