A suspicious device discovered about a block from Helena High prompted a multi-agency response and precautionary searches of nearby streets and possible protest routes. Helena Police received the report around 10 a.m. Thursday of the item on private property near Dakota and Davis Street and called in specialized assistance because of the device’s appearance and location.

Helena Police requested help from the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. KPAX reported that, “Due to the appearance of the device, officers proceeded as if it were a suspected improvised explosive device.” Helena Police also notified Helena Public Schools because the device sat close to a planned protest at Helena High School.

Helena Police described the operational response in a statement: “Due to the device’s proximity to a planned protest in the area of Helena High School, law enforcement worked in coordination with Helena Public Schools to notify school officials of the potential concern. As a precaution, officers conducted thorough searches of the area where the device was located, the surrounding neighborhood, and areas near Helena High School, including possible routes associated with the planned protest. No additional suspicious items were found,” wrote Helena Police in a statement.

Helena Schools Superintendent Rex Weltz said a “jug of gasoline” and fireworks were discovered. Authorities have not stated whether those items were the device or located separately on the private property. No injuries, evacuations, school closures, or arrests were reported in available briefings.

MontanaRightNow reported that the investigation remains active and involves the FBI. Officials have emphasized there is no evidence linking the device to the planned protest or indicating any ongoing threat to Helena High School or the broader community.

The incident underscored how quickly routine calls near key community sites can trigger broad interagency coordination. For residents near Dakota and Davis Streets and families connected to Helena High, the response illustrates local emergency protocols when items are perceived as potential explosive threats and how schools and law enforcement coordinate during planned public demonstrations.

Helena Police say the investigation is ongoing and that they will provide updates as new information becomes available. Community members with information about the discovery or who saw suspicious activity near Dakota and Davis Streets around 10 a.m. Thursday are encouraged to contact Helena Police through their normal public channels.
