Helena bishop meets Pope Leo XIV at Vatican audience in Rome
Bishop Austin A. Vetter met Pope Leo XIV in St. Peter’s Square, tying Helena Catholics to the pope’s push for universal holiness and the diocese’s local priorities.

Bishop Austin A. Vetter stood in St. Peter’s Square as Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful at a Vatican General Audience, a meeting that linked Helena Catholics directly to the pope’s latest teaching on holiness and the Church’s mission.
The audience took place in Rome on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, as part of the pope’s regular Wednesday gatherings when he is in the city. Leo XIV used the audience to continue his catechesis on the Second Vatican Council, including its teaching on the universal call to holiness, a theme that reaches beyond Vatican walls and into parish life in Helena, East Helena, and throughout Lewis and Clark County.
The Diocese of Helena had already welcomed Leo XIV’s election on Thursday, May 8, 2025, when Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was chosen by 133 cardinal electors as the 266th successor of Peter. Vetter, the 11th Bishop of Helena, was ordained and installed on November 20, 2019, and his trip to the Vatican put the local diocese in direct view of the new pope’s priorities.
Photos shared from the audience highlighted Vetter’s prayers for the Helena community and for the Holy Father’s intentions. That detail matters locally because the diocese has recently emphasized prayer and support for Carroll College, where Catholic identity and campus ministry remain central concerns for Helena families, alumni, and parish leaders.

Vetter has also said he remains firmly committed to strengthening the enduring partnership between the Diocese of Helena and Carroll College. Read alongside Leo XIV’s message on the baptized Catholic’s role in the Church’s mission, the Vatican visit points to a familiar local question: how Helena’s parishes, schools, and ministries turn that teaching into action.
For Lewis and Clark County Catholics, the Rome meeting was more than a photo opportunity. It was a reminder that Helena’s bishop is carrying local concerns into the center of the Church while bringing the pope’s message of holiness, lay apostolate, and shared responsibility back home.
