A heat lamp warming newly hatched chicks in a garage off Divine Road ignited a blaze that consumed Helena Fire Captain Mike McDaniel's home on March 12, leaving the 20-year department veteran, his wife Kristen, and their four adult children with almost nothing. Within two weeks, neighbors, union members, and local merchants had organized food fundraisers and donation drives to help the family recover.

The call came in at 11:12 a.m. for what dispatchers initially logged as a garage fire east of the Canyon Ferry Road roundabout. By the time crews arrived, flames had jumped from the garage into the main structure. Seven agencies responded: East Valley, Eastgate, Tri-Lakes, West Valley, the City of Helena, Montana City, and East Helena fire departments. The blaze was not fully extinguished until 3:00 p.m. Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton confirmed the home was a complete loss and said the fire is not considered suspicious. East Valley Fire Chief Willie Wagner identified the heat lamp, used to keep chicks warm, as the ignition source.

That detail carries a direct prevention lesson for anyone keeping chickens or other small livestock in a garage or outbuilding: heat lamps placed near straw, wood shavings, or other combustible bedding are among the most common ignition sources in residential structure fires. Fire safety officials recommend using heat plates instead of lamps for brooding chicks, positioning any supplemental heat source away from flammable materials, and making sure smoke alarms are installed in attached or adjacent structures.

The fundraising response was swift. Volunteers and union members sold burgers and hot dogs at storefront locations across Helena the week of March 26, directing proceeds and additional cash donations to the Helena Firefighters Benevolent Fund, the nonprofit arm of IAFF Local 448. A pasta and pint night at the East Helena VFW on March 27 added another avenue for support. Dave Maslowski, the IAFF Local 448 president, said the outpouring from the community reflected what the fire service is built on: "We talk a lot about in this career field about a brotherhood and sisterhood about taking care of each other, and that is what we are seeing across the community."

The McDaniels' circumstances made the loss particularly severe. Captain McDaniel recently underwent a kidney transplant and is still recovering from injuries sustained in an on-duty explosion on November 7, 2024, which required multiple surgeries on his knee and hip.

Funds collected through the Benevolent Fund go directly toward the family's most immediate costs: temporary housing, clothing, food, and replacement of essential documents and household items while insurance claims work through the system. The Yard Foundation, a firefighter-focused 501(c)(3), and a separate GoFundMe organized by friends of the family are also accepting contributions. Checks payable to the Helena Firefighters Benevolent Fund can be mailed to 300 Neill Ave., Helena, MT 59601.
