Helena man Terence Meagher arrested on felony child sexual abuse charge
Terence Steven Meagher was arrested Feb. 17 in Helena after NCMEC cybertips tied two Lewis and Clark County IP addresses to uploads of child sexual abuse material; 14 tips led investigators to him.

Terence Steven Meagher of Helena was arrested by the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 17, 2026, and charged with one count of felony sexual abuse of children after a National Center for Missing and Exploited Children alert tied two local IP addresses to uploads of material depicting child sexual abuse. Investigators assigned “Fourteen tips were assigned to the report,” which led them to Meagher’s residence in Helena.
Deputies executed a search warrant at Meagher’s home and seized electronic devices, including a laptop, as part of the probe. Investigators allege that “when a search warrant was being served, Meagher admitted to them that he had downloaded and stored files depicting child sexual abuse.” Police documents reviewed by reporters also describe multiple files containing child sexual abuse material on electronic devices recovered at the scene.
The single felony count against Meagher carries statutory penalties prosecutors say could include up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 if he is convicted. He currently faces one count of sexual abuse of children; court filings that specify the statutory citation, any bond amount, and the schedule for arraignment or preliminary hearing had not been made available to the public at the time of this report.
The investigation began after the federal nonprofit that fields online reports of child exploitation forwarded information to local law enforcement pointing to two IP addresses in the Lewis and Clark County jurisdiction as sources of uploads. Local investigators linked those IP addresses to Meagher during their inquiry and pursued a search warrant that produced the seized devices and the alleged admission.
Authorities have not released further details about any additional devices, cloud backups, or whether state or federal Internet Crimes Against Children units are assisting the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office. Reports indicate police documents and the sheriff’s office hold the investigative records; the county attorney’s office will determine formal charging and next steps in court.
