Sweetheart Passion Plunge Draws Chilly Crowd in East Helena for Special Olympics
Helenair’s photo gallery says the Sweetheart Passion Plunge at Town Pump in East Helena raised $13,000 for Special Olympics Montana after plungers jumped into icy water Feb. 14.

Helenair’s post-event coverage reported that the Sweetheart Passion Plunge at Town Pump, 3680 U.S. 12 in East Helena, raised $13,000 for Special Olympics Montana after plungers took the dive on Feb. 14. The gallery of images captioned “A scene from Helena's annual Sweetheart Passion Plunge benefiting Special Olympics Montana on Feb. 14 in East Helena” accompanied the outlet’s $13K headline.
Local media had reported smaller pre-event totals. KTVH said “so far, there are over 50 people registered to take the dive, 9 teams registered, and more than 9,500 dollars raised,” and noted event logistics: “Check-in starts at 10:30 a.m. with the event starting at noon.” Those pre-event tallies and the noon start time were the basis for local check-in and staging at the Town Pump lot when participants gathered to plunge in support of athletes.
The Polar Plunge is a Law Enforcement Torch Run signature event and organizers emphasized law enforcement involvement. KTVH reported that the plunges “are organized largely by local law enforcement, and you’ll likely see a few Helena area members taking the plunge,” and the Helena Montana Police Department’s Facebook post urged the public to join: “Are you brave enough to take the plunge? Gather your friends, family, and colleagues, and run, jump, or crawl into the Sweetheart Passion Plunge on February 14th! The plunge will be held at the new Town Pump in East Helena (3680 US Hwy 12). Please join area law enforcement in raising funds and awareness in support of Special Olympics Montana. To register or donate, please visit the Sweetheart Passion Plunge page.” The Helena PD post, published Feb. 4 at 9:40 a.m., drew 158 reactions, 28 comments and 28 shares.
Organizers and promotional materials stressed the mission behind the stunt. OneCause’s event copy stated, “Special Olympics Montana provides life-changing opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities. We offer sports training, competitions, health screenings, and leadership opportunities that promote inclusion for athletes both on and off the field.” OneCause also framed the fundraiser as a movement: “Taking the plunge isn’t just about the icy water - it’s about what happens because of it. When you commit to being Splashin' with a Passion, you’re doing more than jumping in cold water in the middle of winter… you’re jumping into a movement.”

Registration rules and online platforms were publicized ahead of the event. OneCause listed fundraising minimums of $125 per adult plunger and $50 per youth, student or Cool Schools entry, and Special Olympics Montana’s event page provided calendar export and a registration/donation link for participants and donors. Event contact information listed on the registration page names Amy Bliss at 406-315-4212 and abliss@somt.org for questions about turnout, fundraising totals and follow-up details.
Not all published schedules matched. OneCause’s listing contained multiple, conflicting time entries including a 12:00 p.m. header, a calendar block that began at 1:00 p.m., and an entry reading “Registration Opens At: 10:30 PM.” KTVH’s local reporting of a 10:30 a.m. check-in and a noon start was the clearest schedule cited by media covering the East Helena plunge.
KTVH also placed the plunge in statewide context, noting the tradition began in Whitefish in 1999 and has grown to more than a dozen locations across Montana. Organizers and law enforcement participants in Lewis and Clark County framed the Sweetheart Passion Plunge as both a public spectacle and a fundraising effort to support Special Olympics Montana’s sports, health screenings and leadership programs for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
