5,915-acre Logan County ranch sells at auction for $4.075 million

A 5,915.3-acre pasture tract northeast of Sterling was placed under contract for $4.075 million after a live auction.

The Crook / I-76 Pasture Land Auction sits about 24 miles northeast of Sterling, reached by I-76 to Crook Exit #149, with 7 cross-fenced pastures, 7 wells and steel working and loadout facilities. That combination points to a buyer who can move cattle onto the ground immediately, most likely an established rancher or neighboring operator looking to add grass in a county where ranch-scale pasture still has real value.

The property was offered in two parcels or as a single unit, with possession set for the 2026 grazing season. The ranch’s historic carrying capacity over a five-month season is 365 to 390 cow/calf pairs or 590 to 735 yearlings, based on 1,300-pound cows or 550 to 600-pound yearlings. Precipitation, cattle type, weight and cut can change how many animals the ground will carry. 2025 real-estate taxes were listed at $2,478 total, or 42 cents an acre.

At roughly $688 an acre, the contract price reflects pasture economics more than a buildable or speculative land play. In Logan County, the USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 901 farms and 1,126,091 acres in farms, and livestock, poultry and products accounted for 84% of agricultural sales.
