Crash cleared on Highway 6 near Highway 61, traffic still slowed
Traffic on Highway 6 near Highway 61 slowed after crews cleared a crash in Sterling, and a fuller report may follow through city records.

Drivers on Highway 6 near Highway 61 in Sterling faced a short slowdown after emergency crews finished clearing a crash scene and police and fire personnel remained in the roadway area. Traffic was expected to stay sluggish for a time as responders wrapped up at the intersection, where even a brief incident can back up a key Logan County corridor.
The notice did not say how many vehicles were involved, whether anyone was hurt, or what caused the crash. It did make clear that motorists needed to slow down, watch for emergency personnel and expect lingering delays while the scene was cleared.
For Sterling, the impact reaches beyond the immediate crash site. Highway 6 is one of the city’s main travel routes, and congestion there can spill onto nearby streets, commuter paths and business access points. In a smaller community, a few minutes of lane disruption can alter school runs, shift changes and trips across town.
The cleanup also points to a recurring problem on this stretch of highway. Another recent Logan County crash alert said a multi-vehicle wreck near U.S. Highway 6 at mile marker 418 blocked both directions and involved a semi-truck possibly carrying fuel, with one person trapped in a vehicle. A separate notice said vehicles were not yielding on Highway 6 near mile marker 415 while emergency lights and sirens were activated. Taken together, those alerts show that the corridor has seen repeated response-heavy incidents that have slowed traffic and forced drivers to react quickly.

A more complete account of the Sterling crash may come later through official records. The City of Sterling says accident reports after May 1, 2021 can be accessed through its online crash-report system. The Logan County Sheriff’s Office also maintains records-request procedures for county documents, with a $15 pre-payment required for search and retrieval when requesting sheriff’s office records.
Colorado’s crash-data dashboards also track the numbers, causes, types and locations of roadway crashes statewide, but the state says those records are preliminary and subject to change. For now, the key takeaway for Sterling-area drivers is simple: the crash at Highway 6 and Highway 61 was cleared, but traffic was still moving slowly as crews finished up and normal flow returned.
