Logan County seeks applicants for Northern Water board seat

Logan County residents have until Friday, Aug. 28, at 4 p.m. to apply for the county’s seat on the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District board, a post that helps shape water delivery and long-term supply decisions for farms, towns and other users across Northern Colorado.

Colorado law, CRS 37-45-120(2), makes district directors also directors of the Municipal Subdistrict, giving the Logan County appointee a role in the same governance structure that sets policy and strategic direction. Northern Water operates with a 13-member Board of Directors, plus one Director Emeritus, and its board is appointed from an eight-county service area.

USDA’s 2022 County Profile for Logan County counted 901 farms, 1,126,091 acres in farms, an average farm size of 1,250 acres and $732,734,000 in market value of agricultural products sold. Colorado Water Education puts farmers and ranchers at 89% of the water consumed in Colorado, about 4.7 million acre-feet each year, and Logan County spans 1,845 square miles in northeast Colorado’s Great Plains and South Platte River valley.

Applicants must have resided within Northern Water boundaries for one year. The notice lists 800-369-7246. Northern Water’s terms list, updated Sept. 10, 2025, lists the Logan County seat as currently held by Gene Manuello, whose current term runs from Sept. 28, 2022, to Sept. 28, 2026.

Northern Water was established in 1937 as a local partner to help operate, maintain and administer the federally owned Colorado-Big Thompson Project. The district is the largest water provider in Northern Colorado.
