Sedgwick County-Fleming finished second at the CHSAA 2A Region 3 Tournament with 194.5 points, falling one point short of Burlington’s 195.5 while Rocky Ford placed third at 189.5; despite the narrow margin, nine SC/F boys qualified for the state meet at Ball Arena in Denver. The top four placers at each weight earned berths, and Sedgwick County-Fleming’s qualifiers spanned 106 through 175 pounds and included two regional champions.

The nine boys who advanced are: 150‑pound sophomore Austin Knox, 126‑pound junior Cash Campbell, 157‑pound junior Owen Harris, 175‑pound junior Levi Reichman, 120‑pound junior Cooper Edson, 144‑pound sophomore Maddox Herskind, 113‑pound sophomore Nathan Gonzales, 165‑pound freshman Aidan Gonzales and 106‑pound freshman Kol Herskind. That lineup appears in the team photo caption circulated after regionals and matches the roster sent to state brackets.

Cooper Edson was crowned regional champion at 120 pounds, compiling three major decisions and a 16-7 finals victory over Fowler’s Stockton Sharon while scoring 23 team points and carrying a 41-4 season mark into state. Owen Harris captured the 157 crown with three falls, including a championship pin of Burlington’s Scout Humrich, and entered the postseason at 34-2 after contributing 28 team points at regionals. Freshman Kol Herskind rebounded from a semifinal loss to win back-to-back consolation falls and pinned Peyton’s Austin Kenyon to secure third and a state berth; Herskind’s season record stood at 32-12.

Other regional individual notes that padded SC/F’s 194.5 total included Levi Reichman’s runner-up finish at 175 after a 2:43 loss to Crowley County’s Levi Gibson, Aidan Gonzales finishing fourth after a 9-4 loss to Rocky Ford’s Marcos Villegas, Grant Firme scoring seven team points via a first-round fall and a consolation win, and Liam Amendt adding three points with a consolation fall. Seth Seger placed sixth at 190, while Bryce Kinnie (215) and Dane Cunningham (285) each finished fifth and narrowly missed state qualification.

Head coach Don Schelling looked past the one-point margin and toward state preparations, saying, “I think they’re all pretty confident,” and “I think they feel pretty good about where they’re at and I’m excited for this weekend for sure.” Schelling added, “I didn’t go down to Rocky Ford. I was with the girls, but it sounds from the other coaches that their boys wrestled really well and they lost by a point. It was a pretty competitive tournament. Our schedule’s pretty tough through the year and so I think that kind of prepared them for what they had.”

The SC/F girls program also posted a regional result: the girls finished second in the 4A Region 2 meet with 167 points while Severance won at 224.5. Named girls qualifiers include Lily Torres (gold at 105), Annie Wilson (gold at 140), Christina Lopez, Brooklyn Glende and Kaiya Hall; one headline suggested six girls qualified but only five names were listed in follow-up coverage, a discrepancy the program may clarify with official brackets.

At Ball Arena in Denver, the state tournament produced immediate drama and mixed outcomes for SC/F: Cooper Edson clinched the Class 2A 120‑pound state title with a last‑second three‑point takedown that sealed a 9-8 decision over Cedaredge’s defending champion Cash Martinez, "Edson grabbed Martinez and slammed him down to score a three-point takedown with all zeroes on the clock and to secure a 9-8 decision." Meanwhile Owen Harris medically forfeited his semifinal after suffering an injury in his Friday night semifinal and did not continue. North Fork’s Braeden Flores won the 157 crown and Highland edged North Fork 111-105.5 for the 2A team title.

Sedgwick County-Fleming leaves regionals with a narrow runner-up finish, nine boys headed to Ball Arena and a state champion in Cooper Edson, outcomes that validate the depth and resilience the program has shown across Logan County this postseason.
